APEIR was formerly known as the Asia Partnership on Avian Influenza (APAIR), an institution to promote regional research collaboration on bird flu (H5N1).
In 2009, due to the increasing issues of other Emerging Infectious Diseases (EIDs), APAIR expanded its scope to cover all EIDs, and changed its name to Asia Partnership on Emerging Infectious Disease Research (APEIR). APEIR aims to be the leading EIDs research network that focuses on knowledge translation to encourage research implementation in different country setting. This will help APEIR gain recognition from national and regional organizations. There are six countries (Cambodia, China, Lao PDR, Indonesia, Thailand and Vietnam) in the APEIR network, with more than 30 partner institutions, and more than 50 researchers across the region.

a. Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR)
This research project entitled “An Ecohealth Approach to Develop a Strategy for the Prudent Use of Antimicrobials to Control Antimicrobial Resistance in Human, Animal and Environmental Health in Asia” will be conducted in 5 countries (China, Lao PDR, Indonesia, Thailand and Vietnam). The objective of this study is to explore, develop, and assess the effectiveness of a strategy for the proper use of antimicrobials in humans and animals to control antimicrobial resistance in China and Southeast Asia.

b. Wildlife Trade
This research project on wildlife trade related with zoonoses prevention and wildlife conservation entitled, “Surveillance of Emerging Infectious Diseases in Wildlife Trade to Increase Awareness of Zoonoses Prevention and Wildlife Conservation” will take place in Cambodia, China, Lao PDR, Thailand and Vietnam. The objectives of this study are to demonstrate the zoonoses situation in wildlife trade in the region, and to raise awareness for zoonoses prevention in wildlife trade in order to improve human and animal health and to contribute to wildlife conservation effort.

2. APEIR RESEARCHERS – (2009-2011)
a. Forming Regional Network for Surveillance for Avian Influenza (AI) on Migratory Birds
Four countries (Thailand, China, Indonesia and Vietnam) participated in the project entitled, “Forming of regional network for surveillance and monitoring of Avian Influenza viruses in migratory birds”. The objectives of the project were to enhance the early detection and characterization of Avian Influenza infection at the regional level, and reporting in migratory birds through a coordinated surveillance network.

b. Study on Socio-Economic Impact of AI Outbreak and Control Measure on Small Scale and Backyard Poultry
A social and economic impact research group was formed with the team members from China, Indonesia, Vietnam, and Thailand to conduct the project titled, “Socio-Economic Impact of HPAI outbreaks and control measures on small-scale and backyard poultry producers in Asia”. The main objective of the study was to inform the development of viable control strategies and more equitable interventions to cope with AI, especially for particularly vulnerable households, by analyzing the socio-economic impacts of AI outbreaks and AI control measures on backyard and small producers.
